The world wheelie speed record has been broken.
These guys are serious nutters! Over 200mph on a motorcycle is fast on two wheels, never mind one. The IOM TT riders don’t even go that fast. Egbert van Popta (cracking name!) has just broken Gary Rothwell’s record of 209.8mph with a speed of 213mph. Watch the video below – you won’t believe it!
A Liverpool stuntman has had his world record for the fastest wheelie overtaken.
Gary Rothwell from Kirkby raced into the record books in September 2015 by riding his motorcycle on its back wheel at 209.8mph.
But today Dutch rider Egbert van Popta set a new record when he performed the stunt reaching a speed of 213mph.
Van Popta rode a Hayabusa Turbo 1300CC at the contest at the Elvington Airfield, North Yorkshire, where he beat about 40 rivals from the UK, USA, France, Holland and Ireland.
Straightliners, the event organisers, said riders used powerful customised motorbikes for the feat.
A spokesman added that success depends on the rider’s skills in controlling the speed and balance of the motorcycle, as no electronic or mechanical aids can be used.
Dad of two Gary, 47, from Simsonswood, has held a number of stunt-riding world records, including being dragged behind a motorbike at 156mph in titanium-soled boots in 1999.
He has been featured in the Guinness World Record books and also appeared on Top Gear episodes and the Discovery Channel’s programme, Adrenaline Junkies.
